Enhanced ListingsThis is a not-for-profit web site, but it obviously costs money to maintain, and we need to get that money from somewhere. That's where the Enhanced Listings come in: businesses and commercial concerns can opt to pay a small fee per year and get a better listing. An advert, if you like. How Much Does it Cost?Basic: A basic listing is free. For this you get an entry in the directory that lists your business' name, address, 'phone number and basic factual information (e.g. "Chinese Take-away food, open 12:00-02:00 Monday to Saturday, specialists in Cantonese and Szechwan"). Enhanced: £5 per year. For this you get the option to add in email address contact details, links to any web site you may have, some additional sales information (e.g. "Catering for parties a speciality", "winner of three Restaurant of the Year rosettes for excellence") and a photograph if you want one. Enhanced Plus: £10 per year (£5 for the Enhanced, £5 for the Plus). For this we can host a small "mini web site" for you, with a page or two of your own design and your own content. This is your web site, so you can pretty much do what you like with it, subject to a couple of constraints. All these figures are annual. Again, this isn't a commercial concern, so we're not going to kick you off if you're a week late with an annual payment, but we'll send you a reminder and would appreciate prompt payment. You are, of course, free to change, upgrade or downgrade your service at any time (though no refunds will be given). We're trying to keep these prices reasonable, so hopefully they're within the reach of any local small business who wants to take advantage of this. We don't pretend that this is a competitor for Yellow Pages - but, if you compare these figures to the price of an advert in one of the major 'phone books or web directories, you'll see that we're several hundred pounds a year cheaper. Yes, really. And that couple of constraints? "The Editor's decision is final". The author of this site has final editorial say in what is reasonable in terms of content and suitability (so no pornography or deliberately offensive material, no illegal services, no national organisations, etc.). Why? Because someone has to, and we need to keep this in the community spirit. Likewise for the final say on what is reasonable in terms of the size of the content (so no MP3 hosting, or streamed audio or video, or very heavy Flash sites, etc.). If you think in terms of about 25-30Kb maximum, you'd not be far wrong (each of these pages is around 6Kb, plus the same again for each picture, if that gives you a reference point). Again, why? Simply because we can't afford it if someone uses up all our hosting space! Oh, and I reserve the right to use barter for any of this... if you can help promote or run this website, or otherwise contribute to it in a non-financial way, then I might be persuaded to waive any of the above fees. Perhaps. I'm open to suggestions! Where Does the Money Go?It goes to pay for our hosting and ISP costs, and also for the upkeep of the domain name (the broadwayvillage.org.uk bit). It will also pay for any future enhancements we need to make, such as additional hosting space, database hosting (e.g. for a better directory or for local "forum" type discussion boards), specialist software for mailing lists, licences for maps, search engine submission, that sort of thing. It currently does not go to pay for any development time, though we may need to review that in future if the workload demands it. If we find we're running at a profit then we'll find something worthy and village-related to put the money towards (beyond keeping something back for a rainy day and for future expenses along the lines of those just mentioned, of course). Accounts are, of course, kept, so there's no danger of anyone (me) running off with the money.
